Art Therapy In Namibia |
Creative Arts Therapists Cheryl Walpole & christi meyer volunteered at an environmental educational camp in the Namib desert, called NaDEET. They provided art therapy to the campers who range in age and economic status. We left the camp with the resources to not only enrich their culture, but with the ability to achieve self-expression through art. for further information please feel free to contact either of us at our email: cheryl@arttherapynewyorktonamibia.com arttherapynewyorktonamibia.com |
Our second week with the kids:
Cheryl and I just finished up another week at NaDEET. This past week, 6th graders from DHPS in Windhoek came for the environmental program with the new art addition. These kids were definitely different then the first group that came as they are from a private German school, and art was in their curriculum. They were familiar with the materials and not that resistant to directives. Our art directives correlated with the days educational themes: resources, surrounding environment, and adaptation. I think we had a successful first week as the children gave the art rave reviews!
We are very excited about building a connection with the kids. By meeting with the same kids each day for an hour, we are able to provide a consistent, safe environment for them to express themselves through art. The creations were unique and amazing! One of the most popular directives was to make a creation using only your surrounding environment; no conventional art materials permitted. The kids used sand, seeds, droppings, sticks, grass, and anything else they could find. They left apart of themselves in the environment. One child created the figures in the picture above to express “unity and togetherness”.
Until next week……
