Art Therapy In Namibia |
Creative Arts Therapists Cheryl Walpole & christi meyer volunteered at an environmental educational camp in the Namib desert, called NaDEET. They provided art therapy to the campers who range in age and economic status. We left the camp with the resources to not only enrich their culture, but with the ability to achieve self-expression through art. for further information please feel free to contact either of us at our email: cheryl@arttherapynewyorktonamibia.com arttherapynewyorktonamibia.com |
Who knew the spotty electricity, water pump issues, lack of Internet access and phone interruptions would be a welcome retreat from the modern luxuries we get so used to living in NYC. They all seemed to come at a time when reflecting back to what I know and what I learned was present. Christi and I have completed our last 2 weeks with the children at NaDEET. I can’t help but feel like we just got started! These feelings only solidify the desire to continue this work and hopefully one day return to Namibia.
The link between sustainable living and self-respect is ever present. Teaching the children how to protect their own environment for their own use tomorrow is just as important in New York City as it is in Namibia. Giving them the platform in order to process this information in a non-judgmental setting through the art making proved to be successful and an essential part of exploring NaDEET’s vision. NaDEET’s focus on sustainable living grants balance to the children between “social, political, economic and environmental aspects of our existence to improve the quality of life”. This is something should not only be a Namibian goal.
